Handshake of the Host, affects the Roast

The Circle of Service

Service - the period in which everything is in motion in our hospitality businesses, the chefs are prepped, fridges are stocked, and tables are set. During the period in which we serve our customers, we provide genuine hospitality, showing them a good time and making them feel at home.

Is that service to you?

This is an element of hospitality that is crucial for success. However, as cheesy as it may sound, service to each other is even more critical.

I call it the circle of service.

At the top - The owner / GM is of service to the team - what does that mean? We are all busy with the day to day tasks to operate a successful business. However we have to remember that we are here to guide, train, inspire and connect with the team - this is our level of service.

The team provides the customer with service, and for us, as they are running the wheels of the business, providing a service to keep everything well oiled and running smoothly. If your team does not feel your appreciation, feel a connection to the higher purpose, or your desire to see them learn and grow, they will not provide the genuine hospitality required to be the best.

So the question is - what type of service are you providing your team? Do you have a highly engaged and inspired team? Are they pumped to go to work and do a great job? If your answer is no, you may not be providing them the right kind of service.

I love the saying, “the handshake of the host, affects the roast”. Read that again with your team in mind. How are you working with your team? Are you inspiring them, providing feedback, and giving them opportunities? If not, perhaps this could be a reason why you don't have engaged team members.

It all comes from the top, and your business is a reflection of you.

When things are not going well, are you pointing the finger and blaming others? Or do you look to yourself and think how can I do things differently to get the results I want? What needs to happen here? Who do I have to be to get the results I want?

These are some great questions that I work through with my clients, and I love diving into the emotional intelligence of leadership that gets the most results.
Be a better boss, run a better business, and have a better life. Let's chat to make this a reality for you.
